Mother Science Reveals Latest Funding Round, Greycroft’s Katherine Power Joins Board

The skin care brand just launched its second product, Retinol Synergist.

Skin care brand Mother Science has received additional investment, with Greycroft leading the $3.5 million round.

As part of the deal, Katherine Power, a partner at Greycroft and the founder of Merit Beauty, Versed Skincare and Avaline Wine, is joining the Mother Science board of directors. This is the first board she will join that is outside of the companies she has founded.

“I’ve been closely following Mother Science since the early stages, especially after experiencing the transformative power of malassezin in the Mother Science Molecular Hero Serum firsthand. Malassezin is a breakthrough ingredient in skin care, and I’m thrilled to join forces with Ann Marie and Michael to propel their vision forward, assembling a stellar team and driving exponential growth for the company,” she said in a statement.

Prior to this, the brand raised $6.2 million in November 2022, the majority coming from a seed round led by Female Founders Fund.

Mother Science was founded by musicians Mike Einziger, lead guitarist of Incubus, and Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, a violinist, and launched in May 2023, with Power testing the products beforehand.

“Mike and Katherine have actually been friends for quite some time,” said Edna Coryell, chief executive officer of Mother Science. “Even prior to the brand launching, she tested the products and fell in love with our first product and has just been such a huge supporter of the brand. It’s really fantastic to get to this point where she is joining us in an official capacity and then putting us in a position to take this to the next level.”

The brand officially launched in May 2023 with an $89 Molecular Hero Serum that aims to treat hyperpigmentation. The product’s star ingredient is a yeast-derived molecule called malassezin, which a series of clinical studies have suggested can be effective in treating myriad forms of hyperpigmentation.

This week, it launched its second product, Retinol Synergist, $96, and the additional capital from the latest fundraise will fuel R&D, further innovation, product launches and team growth.

The news comes just a week after it was revealed that Greycroft led TikTok-native skin care brand Experiment’s $3.3 million seed funding round.
