Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio could reunite for an epic Frank Sinatra biopic

It'd be a juicy one.

Hollywood is most certainly in its biopic era.

According to reports, Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio will reunite for the first time since Netflix's Don't Look Up and star in a Martin Scorsese biopic of Frank Sinatra's life, with Leo playing the singer and J-Law portraying his second wife and actress Ava Gardner onscreen.

We've had Priscilla, we've had Back To Black, we've had Bob Marley's One Love – and now two of the entertainment world's biggest names will take on Sinatra and Gardner's lives and legacies.

But first, before anything goes ahead – according to Variety – Scorsese will have to get permission from Tina Sinatra, the singer's daughter, who owns his estate and hasn't yet given her blessing for the film to go ahead.

There's a fair amount of history attached to the story, as Frank Sinatra left his first wife Nancy Barbato – Tina's mother – for Ava, so there could be so painful memories to be relived if the story is brought to screen. Regardless of the speed bumps ahead for the movie to be made, such big names being attached has caused quite the buzz.

The director has been trying to make this film for a while – it was announced as far back as 2009 that Leonardo DiCaprio would star as Sinatra in a Scorsese movie, with the director outlining his plans for different actors to play the singer at various stages of his life.

Taylor Hill

“We can’t go through the greatest hits of Sinatra’s life. We tried this already. Just can’t do it," he told Shortlist, per The Guardian in 2010. "So the other way to go is to have three or four different Sinatras. Younger. Older. Middle-aged. Very old. You cut back and forth in time – and you do it through the music.”

Even back in 2009, Tina Sinatra was reportedly not happy with the director's “hard-hitting approach” to making her father's biopic, so this could mean tricky negotiations ahead.

Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming Frank Sinatra biopic.

What will Martin Scorsese's Frank Sinatra biopic be about?

Of course, nothing is confirmed, but it would be likely to look at Frank Sinatra's marriage to Ava Gardner, a relationship which began in fittingly dramatic circumstances. As the story goes, the couple met and partied together in Palm Springs while Sinatra was still married, and were pulled over by police for shooting out streetlights during their first encounter – after which their movie studio paid off the police officers in order to avoid a scandal.

It's definitely a dramatic love story fit for the screen – the couple were known for big arguments and even bigger reconciliations. After marrying in 1951, Sinatra and Gardner were separated in 1953 and divorced by 1957.
