Is 3 Body Problem season 2 happening? Here's what we know so far

Showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woos say it will be even better.

3 Body Problem only premiered on 21 March, but the new Netflix sci-fi series already has us questioning everything from the laws of nature to humanity itself. In the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo, viewers are taken on a journey that spans across the world and through several different timelines over eight episodes. From the Cultural Revolution in China to present day London to a suitably creepy VR game, the series fundamentally centres on how “a young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to a group of brilliant scientists in the present day", as per Netflix's synopsis.

Based on Cixin Liu’s critically acclaimed Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, the first season focuses on the book of the same name while integrating several key plot elements and characters from The Dark Forest and Death’s End. The show follows five former colleagues known as the Oxford Five — Auggie Salazar (Eiza González), Jin Cheng (Jess Hong), Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo), Jack Rooney (John Bradley) and Will Downing (Alex Sharp) — as they collaborate to take on one of the biggest threats to humanity and the earth as we know it.

So if, like us, you spent the weekend binging the entire series and are wondering whether we'll be getting a 3 Body Problem season 2, here's everything we know so far.

Will there be a 3 Body Problem season 2 on Netflix?

We have a lot of questions following that final cliffhanger, so is 3 Body Problem season 2 on the cards? It would certainly make sense given the loose ends that need to be tied up, and adding fuel to the fire is the fact that showrunner David Benioff previously told The Hollywood Reporter:

“At our first Comic Con [for Game of Thrones] someone asked if we’re going to get a second season. I remember saying there’s a scene that would happen in season three — I didn’t even want to name it, but ‘RW, for people who know — if we can get there, I think we’re going to be okay. And there’s a scene in the second season [of 3 Body Problem] that I feel is — it’s not the Judgment Day scene [in season one] — it’s one that happens in the second season … things wildly escape and there’s one scene, if we get to it, we’re golden — like when we got to the Red Wedding on Thrones.”

Benioff adds, “It’s something we’ve talked about with the Netflix guys, too. Liu Cixin’s created this incredible trilogy and the books just get better for me. The second book is far better than the first, and the third book just completely blew my mind. The story just gets more and more ambitious as it goes, and it takes a huge leap in book two. So I feel like if we survive to the second season, we’re going to be in a good place.”

In a similar vein, speaking to GamesRadar+, showrunner Alexander Woo said: “Well, there’s three novels in the trilogy. The novels get longer and longer so I wouldn’t say it maps out exactly to three."

He adds, "We have some really strong ideas about what to do in a season two, and then it’s a little hazier down the line. But we want to get to the end, we want to get to the end of the trilogy, and whether that’s three or four, you know, or some other number. The goal is to get to the end of the trilogy and it seems like it would map out over probably, certainly more than two seasons but beyond that, it’s hard to know exactly.”

Co-creator D. B. Weiss explains that they’re already working on planning out further seasons, also telling GamesRadar+: “I think we have a pretty evolved sense of where it's going. We've been doing some work on that front and the subsequent seasons after that are a lot hazier because once you really get into the weeds on a season of television it really takes all of your waking hours, and there's not much time left to be simultaneously plotting a third or a fourth season. So the short answer is yes, we've got a second season that is being formulated and kept on deck in the event that we get to go ahead.”

However, with the series reportedly being Netflix's most expensive scripted series ever, coming in at a $20 million-per-episode range, a second season will no doubt depend on the success of this first series.

3 Body Problem season 2 plot

With the season 1 finale adapting elements from all three of Cixin Liu's books, the main focus for 3 Body Problem season 2 would likely be the Wallfacers. This idea stems from the second book The Dark Forest, with Saul (Jovan Adepo) becoming one of the three Wallfacers on earth. His task is to devise a way to defeat the San-Ti in the next four hundred years without revealing to anyone else his plan, given San-Ti's Sophons can see and hear all.

3 Body Problem season 2 would likely centre on Saul working through the dark forest hypothesis, i.e. the idea that there are lots of other aliens existing but no one is vocalising it for fear of being attacked. We'd also expect to see Wade (Liam Cunningham) and Jin (Jess Hong) featuring in the season, as well as potentially Will (Alex Sharp).

This aligns with the synopsis of the second book which states:

“Crossing light years, the Trisolarians will reach Earth in four centuries' time. But the Sophons, their extra-dimensional agents and saboteurs, are already here. Only the individual human mind remains immune to their influence. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a last-ditch defence that grants four individuals almost absolute power to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from human and alien alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown.”

3 Body Problem season 2 release date speculation

As above, 3 Body Problem's showrunners have previously said that they see the series being around four seasons long, including a substantial time skip for the second season.

Co-creator Weiss told GamesRadar+: "We don't have a second season, but we need to keep pushing forward full steam ahead as if we did because if we do get a second season, we'll need to hit the ground running in terms of pre-production and production to get it out to people in some kind of reasonable time. A show like this takes a long time to make and you can’t wait to get started thinking about it until somebody gives you the green light."

While the likelihood of 3 Body Problem season 2 depends on how the first series performs amongst audiences, it sounds like the team are treating things as though a renewal is likely – so wait time for a second season hopefully wouldn't be too long.

We'll keep this page updated with information on 3 Body Problem season 2 as it comes through, though in the meantime you can enjoy revelling in the trailer for season one below:
